Lillian Seenoi, FGM/AIDS program director talks to Maasai Women as part of the MED AIDS Program
MED Students visit the local hospital
to learn about HIV and AIDS
MED offers educational programs on HIV/AIDS in an effort to increase the awareness of HIV/AIDS in the Maasai community and to decrease the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS.
MED shows educational films with HIV/AIDS messages in the evenings outside the community center, often attracting 2,000 people who benefit from learning about the disease and prevention strategies. We also sponsor workshops at the MED center to educate community members about the basic facts of HIV, as well as prevention strategies. MED encourages community members to get tested for the disease.
In addition to community center programs, MED runs an outreach program that brings education to isolated, rural villages. These villages are the least likely to receive information on HIV and are often suspicious of attempts by the Kenyan government to change their behavior. So, MED addresses the need for education in these villages from a culturally sensitive perspective.
